Rhinoplasty

facemodel3A rhinoplasty is commonly called a “nose job”. When you are bothered by the appearance of your nose, you realize that there are not too many nonsurgical things that can be done. When board-certified plastic surgeon David L. Durst, MD sees you regarding your nose, he will ask you what you do and do not like about your appearance. Our office would be happy to discuss your particular situation by phone or if you would like to schedule an appointment, please call.

Rhinoplasty Procedure

The rhinoplasty procedure is a nose reshaping procedure and its primary purpose is cosmetic. There are many reasons that you may be considering a rhinoplasty; you may feel that you have inherited a family nose that you would like to have reshaped, you may have had an injury to your nose that you want to have fixed, or you may just not like the shape or size of your nose. Dr. Durst will see you to evaluate your particular circumstance. In some incidences patients have breathing problems that may be due to problems with their septum inside the nose. These are sometimes addressed at the same time as a rhinoplasty procedure. It is important for you to think about what you would like before he sees you. A rhinoplasty procedure turns out best when both the patient and Dr. Durst completely understand what they are trying to change.

The rhinoplasty procedure can generally be done in patients who are age 16 and older. When you consider a nose reshaping procedure for yourself, it is also helpful to know whether you have had sinus problems in the past requiring treatment or if you have had injuries. When Dr. Durst talks to patients about their nose, the usual complaints are that there is a hump on it, or it is crooked, it is too wide, or that the tip is too bulbous. All of these things can be improved by nose reshaping procedures. In some cases, we can use dermal fillers to accomplish your aesthetic goals.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

The rhinoplasty procedure is accomplished in our surgical facility at the office. In almost all circumstances general anesthesia is utilized. You will go home the same day and will be provided with medications for discomfort. There is some swelling and bruising after the rhinoplasty procedure. Often a nasal splint is used which is a plastic splint taped to the nose to hold it in position while it heals. You will feel fine to talk on the phone or do computer projects within two or three days after the surgery.

Patients in the South generally do not like to go places with their nasal splint on but there is no reason why you couldn’t. The splint comes off after ten days and you will generally look very good at that point. Full activities can be resumed within two to three weeks after the procedure. The long-term appearance refines over a few months but these changes are generally quite subtle such that you actually look good early on.
